a few weeks ago i signed up for an online art/mixed media class

by jeanne oliver
called creatively made.

this week was the first class,

first set of videos,

(which are very imformative and detailed)

and the first assignment.

i LOVED IT!

i have already met a few people that are from nebraska

or live somewhere else but are originally from nebraska.

i have met people from other countries.

i am so excited to see how God will use this class in

each of our lives.

oohhh and i am excited.

my mom signed up on friday!

will be excited not only to do this class with her,

but to see God move in her life.

in the areas were she is struggling.

this was our first assignment

to make a journal to record our thoughts.

jeanne asks some question each week for us to answer.

this first week was all about finding or rediscovering our gifts

that God has given us.

she showed us several ways to do a journal.

this was another way that i couldn't wait to get my hands on.

taking a catalog...anthropologie

cover what we don't like

keep what we do.

but to use it to write thoughts and dreams

and prayers.

wow!

two years....almost!

hello to any of my readers

if i have any.

things have finally slowed down.

when things were coming so fast, my blog was the first to go.

plus, i wasn't feeling very creative.

but now i am back.

and feeling inspired.

last month a few friends and i decided to get together every tuesday for a craft day.

every month we will try sometime new.

in december we picked making rag rugs.

out of thrifted sheets.

oh my goodness, how fun!

this is mine.

for my studio.

i have a concrete floor.

my feet get very cold standing on it.

i haven't crocheted since i was 12.

i am much older now. :)

it was a hoot because none of us really knew what we were doing.

but thanks to kyla

we were able to figure it out.

she helped me with the scalloped edge.

my friend jennie has really taken the craft on.

she has made 5 rugs.

started three more.

i think.

i would love to try to make a large one that looks like a doily.

this month we are doing journals.

using the coptic stitch.

we just decorated the cover this week and will stitch the books together next week.

i want to thank everyone that has stop by to say hello.

how?

well, i do live on a farm 20 minutes from town.

i can go a few days without seeing anyone but mr. farmer and

our daughter.

things can get a bit lonely here.

especially during the winter.

i have had several people comment on my header picture.

and i want to say thank you and answer some questions.

first, yes, this is my barn.

it is covered with metal siding, but

the wood underneath is original.

i would love to tear it off and fix the wood underneath.

and paint it red.

somehow, i don't think mr. farmer would agree!

the barn is what i see while doing dishes.

and second. yes, i did. i took this photo.

it means alot.

spring is slowly creeping in

i have finally started to decorate for spring.

my inspiration is...well, nature.

i am using things that my daughter and i collected on our 'nature hikes'-as she calls them.

things like

bark,

mica,

bird eggs,

bird nests,

rocks,

and dried pods.

i also used this altered canvas that i created last fall.

while it is not spring themed i thought the colors went well.

just more white and creme that i can add!

here is a close up of the bird eggs that we find all spring and summer long.

the nest is really deep so i can really fill it up with all sorts of eggs.

i know the robin eggs, but i am not sure what the other eggs are.

here is a little apothecary jar i planted some baby tears in.

i wish my camera was a better one, i have moss growing in the jar too.

looks like miniature ferns.

but, alas, my camera doesn't do good on close ups.

may have to talk my hubby into getting me a better camera!

welcome everyone to white wednesday! glad you could stop by.

i have fallen in love with all the white and cream that others are using in there home. it just seems so relaxing and calming.

me, however

didn't use to like white.

nope.

not even as an accent.

but now.

living with some much color and a need for some calm in my life,

decided to pull some white in my home.

i don't have much, but i am finding more to use.
and i love it! i even painted my kitchen cabinets to lighten things up.
plus a little distressing can't be wrong.

our daily bread.

it is back to being cloudy and foggy for the past 4 days.

though i do miss the sunshine there is one thing i love about days like this.

making bread.

there is something about filling up your home with the smells of fresh bread.

it smells warm and toasty.

perfect for winter days.

when i , or my daughter.want a piece of bread quickly, i make this.

but, when i have a little bit more time i make

english muffin bread.

the problem is you don't kneed this bread.

which i guess for some people that would be a big plus.

but i find kneeding dough to be relaxing.

but not this bread.

why?

because the dough looks like this.

english muffin bread-makes two loaves

2 1/2 cups milk

1 cup water

2 heaping tablespoons cornmeal

5 1/2 cups bread flour- you may need more

1 tablespoon sugar

2 packages active dry yeast

2 teaspoons salt

1/2 teaspoons soda

warm milk and water until very warm (125). grease 2 bread pans and coat with cornmeal. mix together 3 cups flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and soda. stir milk and water in flour mixture. stir in remaining flour, one cup at a time until a loose batter is formed. (it is almost like a cake batter).

spoon batter into pans, cover and let rise in a warm place until double. about 45 minutes. bake at 400 for 25 minutes, until golden brown. remove from pan immediately and cool.

please don't mind the big hole. it still taste good.

wonderful for grilled cheese and cinnamon-sugar on toast.

how i will be spending my mornings

this is where i will be spending my mornings for the next couple months.

i joined my first bible study a couple weeks ago.

and there is homework.

i haven't had homework since collage.

which was awhile ago.

but i have to say that i really enjoy it.

so much so, that i don't want to quit.

we are studying esther~it's tough being a woman-- by beth moore.

i was told when i joined, that beth has us do homework for 5 days a week.

but i decided that this was important.

more important than housework.

so before i do the morning dishes,

before i do bills,

before i do laundry,

this is what i do.

i get together with my Lord.

after emma leaves for school and mr. farmer leaves for work.

no music, no tv, no voices but mine and my God's.

what a wonderful way to start the day.

so do you have a special ritual in the mornings?

i would love to hear about it.

praise the Lord, the sun is shining!

it has been such a foggy and cloudy winter.

as i am sure most of you have experienced.

i am getting spring fever really bad, but unfortunately i won't be able to dig in the dirt any time soon.

so, instead i decided to make my own roses to display until i can get some planted.

i just took a couple of doilies, folded them in half.

take the bigger of the two, roll it up.

then take the smaller one and roll it up with the bigger one.

add a sprig of velvet leaves and keep it together with a rubber band.

then fluff.

they may not be real,

or red.

but i sure like how they look.

perfect with my dried hydrangeas from last season.

i hope the sun decides to stay out a little longer than it has.

we have only been getting a few hours a week.

now, i know i won't be moving up to the northwest any time soon.

i hope to get back to blogging on a somewhat of a regular bases this week. i think the cloudy days have gotten the best of me lately.

a month of a kitchen redo

we have been wanting to remodel our kitchen since we moved in 5 1/2 years ago. well for christmas, mr. farmer said that a kitchen remodel would be my present.

so for the last month we have been

searching,

debating,

and figuring out

just want we wanted.

our home is a 1930's sears kit home.

unfortunately, the previous owners took out the character

and added 70's character.

we (ok, me) have been wanting to add the 30's back in.

this is the old view of the wall by the pantry. we decided to switch the refrig and this cabinet around to offer a more open layout. (you can see the view of the kitchen as you entered down below. it was blocked by a huge black refrig)

we tore off the old paneling...

i was hoping to expose the brick chimney.

but they had plastered over it.

*sigh*

oh well.

we have instead some 'great' wallpaper.

here is the old view going into the kitchen.

some nice shelves instead.
we just finished covering the wallpaper wall last night. but my cameras battery died, otherwise i would show you pictures.
what we found was some 100 year old wood that my father-in-law had from the old house they tore dawn 30 years ago.
pretty sure it is oak. but not positive.
i would like to find more to cover some other walls in the house.

would should be getting our new countertop in a week of so.
i am so excited!

we found a farmers sink and a wall mounted facuet. i will be posting pictures as we get more work done.
i can't wait to check to see what you all have been up too. i have missed blogging.

a very white wednesday

this last week has been a whirlwind.

not only with all the celebrations that were made up because of the snow at christmas, but now we are having another. looks like a lot of you probably are too.

so that is why i decided to show you are whites that mother nature gave us.

the treats are made and package, the gifts wrapped, and the Christmas music playing. the only thing missing is family. we have had to postpone our get-togethers..

why?

because of this....

we are having a blizzard.

this will be the most relaxing Christmas we have had.

no traveling

no hurrying to get to the next celebration

no eating too much.

nope we are staying home

just the three of us...ok four

if you count our dog.

oh,

one more thing.

please remember the real reason for this celebration.

the birth of our savior

Jesus Christ.

a small town Christmas celebration

boy, seems like eons ago since my last post! i told you that i had a craft fair.

it was a week and a half ago.

in a small town just north of were we live.

it was a blast!

i love small towns and their celebrations. everyone comes and supports what ever is going on.

here are some pics of my table.

i have another one in a week.

so i am back to my studio...creating.

however i am having a hard time getting started. anyone else get creative blocks?

today, we had quite a snow storm...and by the looks of it, most of the central part of the good 'ole usa did.

the wind is going to pick up tonight to form some great drifts.

...holiday open houses. i had one last weekend at the store my wares are at. i have another one next saturday. so i have been spending all my time here.

here are a few things that i have created for the open houses.

in the mean while...emma has to get glasses. these are the ones that she chose.
she should get them after thanksgiving.

a thank you and a redone lamp shade

first of all, i want to say thank you to all those thoughts and prayers sent our way. it was a rough week. However, I thank God, that He gave my uncle strength in the form of family and friends. He told me at the funeral that God doesn't give us any more than we can handle. Just a deep faith.

This is the first time that i am joining kimba at a soft place to land for her diy tuesday.

i am a little nervous...hopefully i do this right.

i found this lamp shade last summer. at the time i didn't know where i was going to use it. but i loved the shape.

i started out by taking all the fabric and trim off. i then spray painted the frame with black paint...

i found a grain sack that i bought several months ago....

i love the texture and color of grain sacks...

anyway, i just cut the grain sack in half lengthwise and sewed the pieces together to make a long narrow piece. i wrapped the grain sack around the form and used clothes pins to hold it. then i took pins and started to pin pleats where ever there was a wire.

sew all the pleats....

i was going to cut off the top...the extra fabric. but when i started to stitch the cover on, i loved the way it fell over to form a little flounce. be sure to sew on some ribbons or such to tie the cover shut.

luckily for me, my hubby still had some overheard lighting that you plug in. just slipped my light shade on, and hang. i had some chandelier crystals that i hung from the bottom. i still plan on using some vintage millinery and lace to dress up the bottom.

i wasn't going to post this, but my uncle, and my cousins needs all the prayers they can get. he lost his wife earlier this week unexpectedly. she was only 53. we are all in shock. i will be gone the rest of the week to spend time with my family. God bless.

meet, jasmine the pumpkin

we got together with my parents monday to participate in the annual pumpkin carving nite. it started when emma was 3 years old.

we have a 3 year boxer, so when emma saw the stencil for a jack-o-lantern that looked like jasmine, of course that was the one she wanted. you can get it here, along with other dog breeds. i believe you have to sign up to join in order to get the stencils. it was pretty fun, but it took a bit longer to do. the scraping took some time to figure out the best way to do.

it is turning out to be a pretty wet day today. may be a good time to bake some bread.

english muffin bread.

did i mention it is a easy recipe?

for Christmas! i know, i know...it isn't even halloween yet. but we have had two snow storms the last 2 weeks. there are some years we don't have snow for Christmas.

emma enjoyed playing outside for a few minutes. as you can see here...

that is her version of a Popsicle.

apparently she wasn't cold enough!

a few weeks ago, i was invited to a Christian womens dinner to show off my items and speak for a Little bit. it is in december, so i thought i would make some winter and Christmas items to show.

and since i was in the mood for Christmas, here is what i got done today...there are a few little bling items i would like to add later.

the picture is out of an old book that i had found at an antique store. the edges were burnt a little, but it didn't affect the pictures. the canvas is 16x20 inches.

i have an eight foot table to fill so i better get busy...i am trying not to procrastinate.

buckets of rain makes for yummy dishes

it has been pretty cold, rainy, and foggy today.

snow is going to start tonight.

3-5 inches.

we went for a motorcycle ride sunday.

it was 72.

anyway, i love to cook when it starts to get cool outside...just warms my heart to warm up my family with some of their favorites.

i have two favs to share tonight.

i am going to start with dessert.

and it is easy, peasy.

only 3 ingredients.

this was adapted from a camping recipe meant to be made in a dutch oven, over a campfire and covered in coals.

see.

isn't it cozy already?

first take a stick off butter and grease the bottom and sides of a

8x8 pan.

next, take a 21 oz can of your favorite fruit pie filling.

here, i used apple because that was the request of our daughter.

however blueberry is the best...

sprinkle a small box of jiffy white cake mix over the fruit.

then cut the stick of butter and put on top of the cake mix.

bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown.

let cool slightly before dishing.

then add ice cream..of course.

it is easy to double to make a 9x13. we use two different types of fruit pie filling...just put one on each half and use a regular size of white cake mix.

yummy!

the next is creamy white chili

this has become my family's favorite soup

1 lb boneless chicken breast, cut into bite size pieces

1 medium onion

1-1/2 teaspoons garlic powder

1 tablespoon canola oil

2 cans (15.5 oz each) great northern beans, rinsed and drained

1 can (14.5 oz) chicken broth

2 cans (4 oz each) chopped green chilies

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1/2 teaspoon pepper

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 cup sour cream

1/2 heavy whipping cream

~in a large saucepan, saute the chicken, onion, and garlic powder in oil until chicken is no longer pink. add the beans, broth, chilies and seasonings. bring to a boil. reduce heat; simmer uncovered, for 30 minutes.

~remove from heat ; stir in sour cream and cream

~enjoy!

studio makeover

my studio is done....well, not really but close. i would like to put up another small cabinet that i found out in the garage, cover my boxes with wallpaper and sheet music, and i have some other small details to finish. but it is much more organized. you can click on any photo to make it bigger.

this lamp i made out of an old lamp shade that i found about a month ago. i will show you how i did it later.

these shelves are made out of original woodwork to the house plus some woodwork out of my first home. i love these! they add that architectural detail that i love.

i plan on painting the table top.....

my studio redo

i really hate to show everyone these pictures, however i am joining the procrastinator's party at the inspired room. so i HAVE to show everyone what i am going to work on. if you are a very organized person, please advert your eyes.

here is my studio...

as you can see it is ...umm....a little messy. i am a little (a lot) embarrassed by this. you see this is the room everyone walks into as soon as they come in the door. it is our back porch (nobody uses the front door).

so as a part of becoming more organized and have a simpler life...aka not as much to clean and put away, i thought this party would be a great way to get in gear.
i am going to purge, hopefully there will be quite a bit that i can get rid of, then i am going to organized the rest. i do want it to be inspiring, not just organized. my big plan is to do this.....without spending money. we are on a very tight budget, so unfortunately we don't have cash to spend on pretties.

this is the color scheme i plan to use. tarnished silver, ironstone, burlap, and sepia tones. thankfully i have loads of paint from old projects and plenty on goodwill finds that i can use to pretty it up. it is hard to see but the wall paint is a soft moss color, so i think that it will work with some of the natural details that i want to use.

the project has to be done in two weeks. i will be showing you little peeks of what i have been doing.
make sure you go check what everyone will be doing. i am sure that there will be some great projects.

boy, i can't believe that it has been almost a month since my last post. life just got in the way. thankful nothing too serious, except letting my dog in after being outside for a mere 10 minutes. she was acting weird. then we smelled why.

yep.

a skunk got her. that lead to opening all the windows, turning on all the fans, about half a can of lysol, and leaving the house for the whole day.

so anyways, i hope to get back to the swing of things, 'cause i have a lot to share. hope everyone is doing well and i will check on all of ya later.

some thrifty finds

welcome everyone! i am joining thrifty mondays at southern hospitality. you can pop over there and see what everyone has found for a wonderful low price.

around here there aren't too many flea markets, but during labor day weekend there has always been a pretty large one about an hour away. i was really looking forward to going but was a little disappointed. the numbers of vendors were down...about half. i did find a few things but had better luck at goodwill and my favorite thrift store.

i found some more additions to my milk glass collection. about 50 cents each. i love using these for candles. they are my 'fireplace' since i don't have one. i will have to show you later what they look like when lit.

at goodwill i found these! for $3 each! and they are huge...about 3 feet. i was so excited...i know they are not everyone's taste, but that is ok. i think i will be painting them black and hanging them by our pantry. mr. farmer is so excited...*wink* here is some more inspiration for these extra large utensils here. dessert must have been on my mind saturday! found two sets of sherbert cups, milk glass and those dark green ones. we are going to be adding shelving to our pantry this fall and wanted old mason jars to fill up. found all 12 for $30. the frame i found is for a project that i will show you later.

feathering my nest---fall style

happy fall y'all!

it's fall nesting week at the inspired room. if you haven't visited melissa, i suggest you pop over there. but i warn you. you maybe visiting her for quite a while. i look forward to seeing what everyone else has done for the harvest season.

i love fall, so it is probably the season i decorate for the most. i wanted to share with you my dining room. i had forgotten about the harvest banner that i made last fall...so that was the first thing up. the painting is one that i had found at a flea market and snatched it up as fast as i could. i love the haying season. maybe it is because i am married to a farmer. maybe it is because it smells so good. but i loved the barn, the colors, the scene of the whole family helping on the farm. plus it was $3.00. i added some of my dried hydrangeas, some found feathers and some wheat.

in this corner, i put some sunflowers in a nail keg that i have had for years.

i found this wooden dough bowl at at antique store for $2.50, then added some decorative acorns that i found at target last year. the antler was a shed that mr. farmer found in his pasture a few years back.....i claimed it as my own. to decorate with. i don't think he is real pleased!

what's for supper

the fruits...er, ah vegetables of our labor. today i was able to pick tomatoes, sweet corn, pull up onions, and dug some potatoes for supper. well the tomatoes are for making salsa later this week. i have a recipe all picked out...unless i find another one before then. i am always changing my mind.

anyways, back to supper. gathering food is a great stress reducer. until i dug the potatoes. i also dug up a fire ant nest. yep. there i was, doing the two step, tying to stay out of their way. little miss emma ran to the other side of the garden. she was not going to have any part of them. the bad part of this? the plant that they had claimed as their own had very small potatoes...and i am going to blame them. is that fair? yep, i think so.

hash, is one of my favorite foods to make in the summer. because it is quick and i don't have to turn on the oven. anyways, i was anxious to try our own homegrown. let me tell you. store bought veggies can't hold a candle to homegrown. everything was so tender and moist. i hope i can keep the onions and potatoes through winter. maybe those small taters will work with a roast.

i have been craving homemade bread, but didn't have the time for all the mess. in comes little miss emma's favorite item. my beer bread. it tastes so good, and the crust is every one's favorite part. i am not kidding. we fight over it. so buttery and crisp.

see. don't that look yummy?

i don't think one ear of corn was enough for any of us. however, since we planted it late, the grasshoppers got to the silk and some of the ears didn't develop kennels. good thing my in-laws had enough corn to freeze. about 100 quarts.

for those of you that want a quick and yummy bread recipe, here it is.

3 cups self-rising flour

1/2 cup sugar

1 12 oz bottle of beer

1 stick of butter, melted

mix together flour and sugar. add beer. pour batter into a greased bread pan. pour melted butter on top. bake at 350 for 55-60 minutes. i cover my bread with tin foil for the last 15 minutes. that way the crust won't burn.

this bread makes wonderful french toast because it is slightly sweet and very dense. i do recommend, however, to try and wait at least 10-15 minutes before slicing the bread. that way it doesn't fall apart.

welcome friends! i am joining metamorphosis monday at Between Naps on the Porch and today's thrifting treasures at Southern Hospitality. i am really excited to check every one's changes.

i bought this little chair at goodwill last summer for $10.00. i knew i was wanting to recover it but wasn't sure how or with what fabric. well, i visited a pottery barn and was inspired by this fabric on this chair.... Pottery Barn

i was able to find similar fabric at hobby lobby, and come out of the store with two yards, some button cover kits and some trim. got home, found the staple gun and hot glue and went to work. it is not a professional job...i didn't tear off the old fabric. i was afraid that if i did, i would have a bigger project that i wasn't sure i would be able to finish. i was able to cover the chair with one piece of fabric. i didn't sew pieces together like the original was. i even was able to figure out how to cover buttons and sew them on the back. the seat is still not done....so don't look to close to the pictures...

this has become my favorite chair. it is where i sit to use my computer, read a book or just to sit and enjoy the quiet.
